Most of Canada’s Yukon exists as vast wilderness. Whitehorse is the largest “city” with a population of about 30,000. The Alaska Highway passes through Whitehorse and a few miles of associated ranchlands., where horses may be found along the unfenced roadside. On one trip we thought we saw a mounted cowboy with two dogs riding towards us on the side of the road in the distance. As we got closer, we found it was a Mama Grizzly standing tall and watching for a safe crossing with her two young-of-the-year cubs. We slowed and stopped, they crossed and went into the safety of the spruce trees, and when we eventually drove by, she was standing tall and giving us the glare. Yikes!
